Local Schools Are in on ABC Action

Vance Elementary School of Human Diversity and Ecology and Isaac Dickson Elementary School will host two action projects as part of the Ashevillage Building Convergence on Saturday, June 21st. Participants at Vance Elementary will learn basic techniques for cob construction by assisting in the building of an earthen shed. Cob building is an ancient building technique using clay, straw and sand to form loaves or cobs of the muddy mix. The school hosts a community garden where children and neighbors are encouraged to dig in to help the garden grow.

Continuing a cob oven project at Isaac Dickson elementary, participants will learn and help with the construction of a green roof which will serve to protect the recently constructed oven. Along with the schools’ staff these two projects are spearheaded by Tony Beurskens of Artisan Builders Collective, which offers services in construction, consulting, community building projects and educational workshops, and Meka Bunch of Growing Home, a freelance building and consulting business which specializes in natural building. Both Bunch and Beurskens also work with Kleiwerks International in their education and outreach projects.

And here’s a map to these projects and all the ABC projects, June 19-21.
