Mountain Xpress: Village People

The Mountain Xpress has a great article by Rebecca Bowe on the Ashevillage Building Convergence. Rebecca will be on the scene during the event as well, so look for more great Mountain Xpress coverage in the coming days and weeks.

The seeds for the Ashevillage Building Convergence were sown a dozen years ago when a small group of people in Portland, Ore., transformed a run-of-the-mill intersection into an attractive public gathering space. They built an earthen teahouse, planted gardens, erected a kiosk for fliers and poetry, painted a vibrant design on the pavement, threw a block party and dubbed their creation “Share-it Square.”

What they didn’t do was ask permission first.

That drew the ire of city officials, who took a dim view of nonpermitted structures. But the grass-roots project proved wildly popular, and four years later, the Portland City Council approved an ordinance making such community-based enhancement efforts legal.

Featured Presenter: Mark Lakeman

ABC welcomes City Repair co-founder and true community activist, Mark Lakeman, as part of the first Building Convergence project in Asheville. Lakeman founded the organization after coming to realize the importance of community through world travels and his own experiments with potlucks and a T-Hows, serving up brews to passersby. The first project organized by Lakeman was an ‘Intersection Repair’ which transformed a plain intersection into a neighborhood gathering space. Lakeman also has worked with Dignity Village, a sustainable, self organized, community being built by homeless people in Portland. Trained as an architect, Portland, OR based Lakeman has now formed his own firm, Communitecture, to serve the design needs of City Repair and other community oriented projects. Lakeman will be part of the Opening Ceremony on Thursday, June 19 and the Ashevillage Town Meeting on Friday, June 20, as well as during the weekend. Come out, meet and learn from Mark!

City Repair

ABC is inspired by a nine year model that has been exponentially thriving in Portland, Oregon — The work of City Repair and their annual 10-Day Village Building Convergence.  City Repair’s Mark Lakeman (visionary extraordinaire) and Lydia Dolman (Project Coordinator) will be guest stars at the Ashevillage Building Convergence, presenting at the opening ceremonies.

The last time they came to Asheville they presented at Sky People Gallery in 2003.  Their electrifying presentation lit the crowd on fire.  The stories of how neighbors in Portland are working together to transform unused spaces into community places are incredibly inspiring.  City Repair, of Portland, is very excited to know that the ABC is happening.

The Ashevillage Building Convergence is the first full-fledged offspring event of the Village Building Convergence in Portland.  Mark stated: “1,000 wild horses couldn’t keep us from coming to the Ashevillage Building Convergence!  I can’t wait to be there again!”

And we’re looking forward to having ‘em back!
